The project, led by an anonymous cybersecurity professional, used AI to generate tweets, articles, and profiles, highlighting the ease of creating AI-driven disinformation. Disinformation researchers are concerned about the potential for personalized propaganda campaigns and AI-powered social media accounts. Evidence of AI-powered disinformation is emerging, including in political campaigns. OpenAI, the creator of AI language models like GPT-3, is updating policies to address this issue, but public awareness lags behind. Society must become more vigilant about recognizing AI-generated content, especially in politics.
